Q
I'm a student wanting to pursue a career in journalism.
How do you recommend I go about this? -
A
First, find a university that offers a solid program when it comes to Journalism and Radio/Television/Film. You'll want to take a diverse course load to have a good understanding of the business. Also, pursue an internship at a station of your choice. This is a great opportunity to see the day-to-day of a news operation and make some great contacts.
Speaking of contacts, make as many as you can through friends, college professors and your internship. You never know who will help you get that first job! Last, and most important, have a great attitude. Guaranteed, your first job will have long hours and low pay. A positive frame of mind will get you through.

Q
How do you prepare for work?
-
A
I read the morning paper, check the internet for breaking news stories and generally watch Local 2 News at 11am before I go to work. Once there, I'll skim through the wires and start reading my upcoming newscasts. Most of the time, I'm a copy editor so I will add information if needed and re-write the story to fit my style.

Q
Who does your hair and make-up, and does someone provide your wardrobe?
-
A
I style my own hair and apply my make-up for the newscasts. I find that MAC make-up works the best for me. I've listed my hair salon info on my Links page. Regarding wardrobe, it's not provided, so I have to shop for all of my on-air suits.
